The Best Free Japanese Textbooks Online (2026)

When I started learning Japanese, the first thing I did was price out Genki. The two-book set plus the workbooks came to more than I wanted to spend on a hobby I might quit by March. So I did what a lot of self-learners do: I went looking for a free option, found about forty of them, and had no idea which ones were real.

That is the actual problem with free Japanese textbooks. There are plenty. The hard part is telling the genuinely good, openly licensed, complete ones from the freemium landing pages and the abandoned PDFs. This guide is the list I wish I had found on day one. At the end I will be honest about where a free textbook stops being the right tool, because that handoff is where most learners get stuck moving from beginner to intermediate level, and it is the part the textbook lists never cover.

A quick note on who this is for. If you are a complete beginner who still needs the Japanese alphabet, hiragana and katakana, the textbooks below are exactly where you should start, and most of them teach the kana in their first lessons. If you have already learnt hiragana and katakana and you have your grammar core, skip to the last two sections, because at that point a textbook is no longer the thing holding you back.

What makes a free Japanese textbook actually usable

A free Japanese textbook is worth your time when it teaches grammar in a clear sequence, gives you example sentences and phrases you can reuse, and is complete enough to take you from your first hiragana chart to a solid beginner foundation. The best free ones are openly licensed, which means you can download the PDF, print it, and keep it without a subscription expiring on you.

Three things to check before you commit to one

Before the list, three things to check on any free resource, because "free" hides a lot of variation.

First, is it actually free, or is it a freemium site where the first three lessons are free and the rest is paywalled?

Second, is it written in your own language, usually English, with English translation and grammar explanations, or is it written entirely in Japanese and meant for a classroom with Japanese teachers? Some of the best textbooks are the second kind, which is fine if you know that going in.

Third, does it cover grammar with real explanations, or is it just vocabulary lists and a practice section? Vocab practice is useful, but on its own it is not a textbook.

With that, here are the free Japanese textbooks and courses that hold up in 2026.

Tae Kim's Guide: the best free grammar resource

Tae Kim's Guide to Japanese Grammar is a free, roughly 350-page grammar resource that has been the self-learner's go-to textbook for over a decade. It is the first resource almost every immersion learner names, and for good reason. It explains grammar from the ground up in plain English, with practical example sentences for every grammar point, and it teaches the language the way Japanese actually works rather than translating English grammar into Japanese.

The guide is available free on the web and as a downloadable PDF. It is not a full course with a graded practice section and answer keys, so it pairs best with a separate practice tool, but as a grammar reference it is hard to beat at any price. If you only open one thing on this list, open this one.

What Tae Kim is built for: a clear, no-cost grammar foundation you can read straight through, covering verbs, adjectives, particles, and sentence structure. What it leaves to other tools: structured drills, listening practice, and vocabulary scheduling.

Genki: the paid benchmark worth knowing

Genki is a popular beginner textbook worldwide, and it is the book most classroom courses outside Japan are built around. It is not free, so it does not headline this list, but it is the benchmark every free option gets measured against, so it is worth knowing what you are comparing to. Genki is an integrated course: each chapter pairs grammar explanations with dialogues, a vocabulary set, reading comprehension passages, and a workbook practice section, with audio available for the listening parts.

The reason to mention a paid book in a free guide is honesty about the gap. What you are paying for with Genki is the structure: the exercises, the answer keys, and the classroom alignment. The free grammar resources below cover the same beginner grammar Genki teaches; what they tend to lack is that built-in graded practice. If you want exercises with answers, Genki earns its price. If you want grammar coverage at zero cost, read on.

Irodori and Marugoto: free integrated courses from the Japan Foundation

Irodori: Japanese for Life in Japan is a free coursebook created by the Japan Foundation, and as of 2026 the full PDF files are available to download at no cost from anywhere in the world. It comes in three parts, Starter, Elementary 1, and Elementary 2, and it focuses on practical Japanese for daily life and student life rather than abstract grammar drills. If your goal is living, working, or traveling in Japan, the situations and expressions Irodori teaches are the ones you will actually use. Audio files come with the books, which covers the listening practice that older free PDFs often skipped in their audio CDs era.

Marugoto: Japanese Language and Culture is the Japan Foundation's flagship coursebook, organized around six levels and built to teach language and culture together rather than separately. It leans into Japanese culture as part of the lesson, not as an afterthought. Because both come from the Japan Foundation, the content is professionally produced and aligned to the JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education. These are among the strongest genuinely free, openly licensed integrated courses available right now, and most textbook lists underrate them because they are newer than Genki.

Elementary Japanese without the classroom price tag

Both Irodori and Marugoto are built for elementary Japanese, the A1 to A2 stretch where a beginner needs structure most, and both deliver it without the tuition a language school would charge for the same content. If you want a real curriculum rather than a grammar reference, start here.

Minato and NHK World: free self-study courses online

Minato is the Japan Foundation's free e-learning platform, and it is where Marugoto comes to life online. It currently offers free self-study courses at the Starter (A1), Elementary 1 (A2), and Elementary 2 (A2) levels, and you can learn alongside Erin and interact with other learners around the world. Erin's Challenge! I Can Speak Japanese is an interactive program for beginners built around Erin, a high school exchange student, and her video series is a beloved beginner resource in its own right. The combination of a structured coursebook, video, and an online platform makes this closer to a full course than a standalone textbook, which is exactly what a lot of self-learners are missing.

NHK World rounds this out with free Japanese lessons at various difficulty levels, including the on-demand video series "Activate Your Japanese," produced with the Japan Foundation for people preparing to live and work in Japan. It is listening-and-situation practice rather than a grammar textbook, which makes it a good supplement to the reading-heavy resources above. As with any platform, confirm the current free course catalog on the Minato and NHK World sites before you build a study plan around a specific level.

University open textbooks (OER): full courses, zero cost

Open Educational Resource textbooks are full university Japanese courses, openly licensed and free to download, and they are the most underused option on this list. Two worth knowing: Portland State University's "Beginning Japanese for Professionals," which focuses on workplace and formal Japanese, and a roughly 440-page beginner textbook from Monash University that covers hiragana, katakana, grammar, conversation, and cultural context.

These are real classroom textbooks released under open licenses, which means you can download the PDF legally and keep the same content a tuition-paying student uses. They tend to be more academic than Genki, with less hand-holding, but the grammar coverage is thorough and the price is zero. Search the Open Textbook Library for the current catalog, and verify the license on each book's own page before you print or redistribute it.

Minna no Nihongo and other reference books

Minna no Nihongo is one of the most widely used reference books and textbooks in Japan for serious learners, especially in classroom and language-school settings. The thing to know is that the main textbook is written entirely in Japanese, by design, so it is meant to be used with a separate translation and grammar-notes companion book in your own language. The core books are not free, but the supporting practice materials, vocabulary lists, and audio that the community has built around it are widely available online at no cost.

I am including it here with a caveat rather than leaving it off, because if you end up in a class or a language school in Japan, this is very likely the book you will use, and knowing how it is structured ahead of time helps. For pure self-study on a zero budget, Tae Kim plus Irodori will serve you better than hunting down Minna no Nihongo's companion volumes.

Free JLPT grammar and practice resources

If you are studying toward a JLPT level, several sites offer free organized grammar and practice material. Nihongo no Mori covers N3, N2, and N1 grammar in depth. Japanese Test 4 You provides free JLPT practice resources across all levels. Nihongo Library offers downloadable PDF study materials for N5 and N4.

These are not textbooks in the cover-to-cover sense; they are reference books and practice banks organized by JLPT difficulty, and JLPT prep books in general organize grammar points from easiest to hardest. That makes them a strong complement to a main textbook once you know your target level.

A note on kanji counts

One honest note on JLPT levels: the commonly cited kanji and vocabulary counts per level (around 100 kanji for N5, climbing to a couple thousand for N1) are community estimates, not official Japan Foundation thresholds, so treat any "you need exactly X kanji" claim as a rough guide. What is official is that about 2,000 kanji, the jōyō set, are commonly used in everyday written Japanese, and a full beginner-to-intermediate course will introduce them gradually.

Where to find more: resource portals

Two free portals exist specifically to help you find other resources. NIHONGO eな, run by the Japan Foundation Kansai, is a portal that curates and categorizes websites, tools, and apps for studying Japanese, organized by language skill and level so you can find what fits. Resource databases like this (sometimes listed under names like J-SourceDB) do the same job: they help you find free language-learning resources online without digging through search results yourself.

A few more genuinely free options are worth a look from those portals. Japanese from Zero! offers a series of beginner books designed for self-learners, with culture clips built into the lessons, and the early volumes are the free entry point. "Japanese in Anime & Manga," a Japan Foundation site, teaches expressions through interactive content for learners who want their practice tied to media they already enjoy. And Hirogaru Nihongo offers twelve topic-based units for reading and listening practice once you are past the absolute basics.

Where the free textbook runs out (and what to do next)

Here is the part the textbook lists skip. Every resource above is built to take you from zero to a solid beginner foundation, somewhere around N4. That is a real achievement, and a free stack of Tae Kim plus Irodori plus a JLPT practice bank can absolutely get you there.

What no textbook can do is make the next several thousand words stick. A beginner textbook introduces maybe 1,000 to 1,500 words across its lessons, brought in gradually, with kanji introduced a little at a time. Real Japanese, the news articles, the novels, the YouTube videos you actually want to understand, contains far more than that, and the words arrive in no particular order. This is the intermediate wall. It is not a grammar problem you can fix with another textbook, and it is not solved by a kanji course alone, though tools like WaniKani, which teaches kanji through spaced repetition and mnemonics, can help on the character side. The wall is a volume-and-retention problem, solved by reading widely and remembering what you read.

The honest answer to "what comes after a free textbook" is: real reading, plus a way to look words up and remember them without breaking your flow. That second half is where my wife and I spend our working hours, so I will be upfront that the next section describes our own tool. I am including it because it is the specific job a textbook cannot do, not because it is another textbook.

immit: the lookup and retention layer for after the textbook

immit is a free popup Japanese dictionary and spaced-repetition flashcard system, available as a Chrome extension and a desktop app for Mac, Windows, and Linux. It is not a textbook and it does not teach grammar. What it does is the thing a textbook hands off to you and then leaves you to do on your own: when you are reading real Japanese and you hit a word you do not know, you hover over it to see the reading, the definition, an example sentence, and pronunciation audio, and you save it to a built-in review queue with one click.

How it fits the read-and-remember loop

The reason this matters for a learner leaving the textbook stage is workflow. The usual setup is a dictionary open in one tab, your reading in another, and a separate flashcard app where you manually retype the words you want to remember. immit collapses that into one surface: look up the word, save it, and review it later in the same place, with a built-in 8-stage spaced-repetition system that schedules the reviews for you. There is no account required for the free tier, and lookup, save, and review all work offline. Pro is $9 a month or $108 a year and adds syncing across multiple computers, cloud backup, and dark mode.

What it does and does not do

immit looks up the word forms it recognizes; it does not yet resolve heavily conjugated verbs back to their dictionary form the way some tools do, so the grammar knowledge your textbook gave you is still doing real work when you read. It also shows furigana on the word you look up, inside the popup, rather than across the whole page. I mention both because honesty about scope is the whole point of a list like this. What immit is for is the read-look-up-remember loop on web-readable Japanese, the NHK Easy articles, the Aozora Bunko stories, the web novels, that the textbook was preparing you to tackle.

If you want to set up the after-the-textbook half of your stack now, you can add the immit Chrome extension and desktop app free, with no account, and have the lookup-and-save loop ready for the day your textbook runs out.

A free stack that actually gets you somewhere

You do not need to spend anything to build a real foundation in Japanese. A working free stack in 2026 looks like this: Tae Kim's guide for grammar, Irodori or the Minato course for a structured beginner curriculum and daily-life Japanese, a JLPT practice bank if you are testing, and a lookup-and-retention tool like immit for the moment you start reading real material. Add a paid integrated course like Genki later if you want graded exercises and answer keys, but you can get a long way before you ever need to.

The mistake I made early on was treating "find the perfect textbook" as the whole task. The textbook is the first rung. The thing that actually moved me from beginner to intermediate level was reading widely and remembering what I read, and that started the day I stopped shopping for books and started reading. Learning Japanese should be a little fun, too, and for me the fun started when I could finally read something I actually wanted to read.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free Japanese textbook?

For grammar, Tae Kim's Guide to Japanese Grammar is the strongest free resource, with clear English explanations and example sentences across roughly 350 pages. For a complete free beginner curriculum, the Japan Foundation's Irodori (free PDF download) or a university open textbook like Portland State's or Monash's are the best openly licensed options. The "best" one depends on whether you want a grammar reference (Tae Kim) or a full integrated course (Irodori, Marugoto and the Minato platform).

Can you learn Japanese for free?

Yes, to a real point. A free stack of Tae Kim for grammar, Irodori or the Minato course for structure, and a JLPT practice bank can take you from zero to a solid beginner foundation, roughly N4, at no cost. Where the free stack hands off is the intermediate stage, where progress comes from reading real Japanese and remembering thousands of new words. A free lookup-and-review tool like immit covers that retention half without a subscription.

Are free Japanese textbooks as good as paid ones like Genki?

For core grammar, yes. Tae Kim and the open university textbooks cover the same beginner grammar Genki does. What paid textbooks like Genki add is a structured practice section, answer keys, and classroom alignment, which matter a lot if you are studying in a class or you want graded practice. For self-study on a budget, a free grammar resource plus a practice bank closes most of the gap.

What should I use after a beginner Japanese textbook?

Real reading, plus a way to look words up and remember them. Once you have your grammar core, the bottleneck is vocabulary volume, not more grammar. The standard next step is graded readers and real text (NHK News Web Easy, web novels), paired with a lookup-and-save tool like immit so the words you meet while reading get scheduled for review instead of forgotten. Add a grammar reference like Bunpro or Renshuu if specific grammar points are still tripping you up.

Do I need a textbook if I use immit?

Yes, if you are a beginner. immit is not a textbook and teaches no grammar; it is the lookup-and-review layer for reading real Japanese once you already have the grammar core a textbook gives you. The two do different jobs. Start with a free textbook for grammar, then add immit when you begin reading.

Where can I download free Japanese textbook PDFs legally?

Stick to openly licensed and official sources: the Japan Foundation's Irodori PDFs, the Open Textbook Library for university OER books, and each publisher's own free download page. Verify the license on the resource's own site before printing or sharing. Avoid pirated scans of paid textbooks like Genki or Minna no Nihongo; the free, legal options above are good enough that you do not need them.
